An
incredible new voice hits the Canadian country music
scene this month when Heather Dawn breaks out with
the release of her first single and the accompanying
video, Beautiful People.
While the song is being released to radio stations
across Canada, the video makes its debut on CMT Canada’s
The Buzz program on Monday, May 5th (7pm and 11pm
EST).
“Beautiful People is a song that every woman
can relate to,” Dawn says. “It’s
our relationships that make us feel like beautiful
people – not whether or not you look like a
Barbie doll.”
“It’s a zippy, up-tempo tune that is
just a lot of fun, like most of the cuts on the album,” she
adds. “I also think it’s a perfect song
for the summer and cruising weather.”
Dawn had already recorded eight songs for debut
album, when Nashville-based country song-writer Gregory
Becker presented her with Beautiful People. She liked
the song so much that she decided to make it the
title track for her album, the first single and also
her first video.
The video was shot in Calgary by acclaimed director,
Joel Stewart. An award winner for the CCMA Video
Director of the Year, Stewart has worked with talent
like Blue Rodeo, Terri Clark and Paul Brandt.
“The video tells the story of a daytime drama,
Beautiful People,” Dawn explains. “We
see various scenes of the attractive, looks-obsessed
people in the drama in the background. I’m
in the foreground offering my thoughts through the
song. It’s a neat twist that was fun to film.”
Dawn’s album, which will be released later
this year through Royalty Records, was produced by
Bart McKay and mastered in Switzerland by Kevin Churko,
the same engineer and at the same studio where Shania
Twain’s music is produced.
Dawn, raised in the country, says songs like Beautiful
People, “tell listeners I am what I am – an
actual country girl. My first exposure to music was
mom and dad playing eight tracks by the likes of
The Kendalls, Johnny Cash and Glen Campbell.” She
includes among her influences Shania Twain, Faith
Hill, Tricia Yearwood, Tanya Tucker and Patsy Cline.
A mutual acquaintance referred Dawn to McKay, who
also produces and plays for Brad Johner. McKay suggested
she take her work to Johner’s manager, Louis
O’Reilly.
O’Reilly reports he was swept away by Dawn’s
talent. “Heather has one of the best new voices
in country music,” he enthuses, "and her
album is just one of those you want to play over
and over again.”
Heather's album Beautiful People will have its Canadian
release on August 12, 2003.
